happy in the rain

“I Am Happy When It Rains”

This nugget came out of a phone conversation with my Dad who lives in Germany. By the way, it rains there a lot more often than in Texas (especially in the Summer).

Greetings. Dr. Stephie here. A few days ago, I talked with my Dad, who lives in Germany. He related to me a little saying which I thought was just priceless. It stems from Karl Valentin. He was a Bavarian comedian and lived from 1882 to 1948.

This is what he said. I’ll say it in German first:
Ich freue mich, wenn es regnet. Wenn ich mich nicht freue, regnet es trotzdem.

I am happy when it rains. When I’m not happy, it still rains.

Hilarious. What do you make out of that? There are many things we don’t control, for example, whether it rains. We might as well be happy about the things that happen that we don’t have any control over.

Now that can be harder to do than to say, of course. However, I think the saying points us to the fact that we always have a choice about how we view things, whether we choose to be happy or unhappy about whatever it is.

I’m Curious

How do you like Karl Valentin’s saying?

Well said. The only thing we can control is how we respond to our circumstances.
