Book of Proverbs

Learning Wisdom From Previous Generations

My journey of writing daily Brilliance Nuggets has led to friends recommending subjects to me. For example, a friend of mine suggested I look at writing about Proverbs where learning wisdom is easy

I think that is a good idea. When writing about the transfer of knowledge, expertise, and especially wisdom, it is impossible not to touch on the book of Proverbs. The Book of Proverbs is an essential part of the old testament, or as the Jews call it, the TaNaK. The Book of Proverbs gave rise to the expression “proverbial wisdom.”

Previously, I said that I aim to be inclusive in my Brilliance Nuggets. That means I want to include you, regardless of what religious beliefs you have or don’t have.

Yet, the Book of Proverbs (and one might argue the entire bible) is relevant to everyone. The old (and new) testament are a collection of human stories gathered over thousands of years. Our societies’ morality and laws are based upon the wisdom they share.

What Is the Book of Proverbs?

Focusing on the book of Proverbs, it is the first of three Wisdom Scrolls. The other two are Ecclesiastes and Job. The Bible Project describes the Book of Proverbs as “a guide for living well in God’s world.” If you don’t believe in God, I think you will still find the wisdom it passes on as an excellent guide for living well.

I invite you to watch this fantastic (and concise) introduction to the Book of Proverbs.

Thinking About Proverb 12:1

Last but not least, for this Nugget, I want to share Proverb 12:1 with you.

“Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid.”

Proverb 12:1

It takes discipline to acquire knowledge. It takes discipline to pass it on as well. And, it takes desire and being humble to be taught and corrected as you learn. Read my Nugget on “Stephie, the Parrot,” and you understand how much I believe in this piece of wisdom.

In conclusion, the Book of Proverbs is a fantastic example of collecting wisdom and passing it on. The understanding it shares has become immortal and continues to steer our lives to this day.

I’m Curious

    Proverbs is an excellent choice when wisdom is desired. The first seven verses sum it up.

    1The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
    2 for gaining wisdom and instruction;
    for understanding words of insight;
    3 for receiving instruction in prudent behavior,
    doing what is right and just and fair;
    4 for giving prudence to those who are simple,
    knowledge and discretion to the young—
    5 let the wise listen and add to their learning,
    and let the discerning get guidance—
    6 for understanding proverbs and parables,
    the sayings and riddles of the wise.
    7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
    but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
    Proverbs 1:1-7 NIV

    I don’t know anyone who cannot benefit from what’s in Proverbs. Kudos my friend!
